How about using JasperPHP as a wrapper ? I'll give it a try.

There are several PHP wrappers for Jasper, and that one is probably the best.

The PHP wrappers all have limitations. They can dump the contents of tables very well, but if you want to perform calculations on any fields within the report, or if you reformat the databases ISO formatted DATETIME fields within your report, the PHP wrappers won't handle these calculations or conversions. Unfortunately, you need Java if you want to do more than pretty-print the SQL output, or if you're performing sub-reports, or sub-sub-reports.

I tried working around JasperPHP's limitations by formatting within my SQL. Then, I ran into a font sizing issue and said bad words.

JasperStarter does almost everything that JasperSoft's Tomcat-based ReportServer platform does. (JasperServer sends emailed reports

          Great job!!!

I'm using the same component in a more simple way but your approach is definitely better and gave me a lot of new ideas.
